Von Duprin Exit Devices and Strikes
98/99 Series Exit Devices
The Von Duprin 98 and 99 Series serve as the primary heavy-duty push pad specifications for high-traffic educational and healthcare facilities. While both models utilize the same internal mechanics and ANSI Grade 1 latching components, they differ in their exterior housing design. The 99 Series features a textured, grooved mechanism case, whereas the 98 Series utilizes a smooth case for a cleaner architectural aesthetic. Both devices include a deadlocking latchbolt that prevents the bolt from being retracted by a credit card or tool when the door is closed. The modular chassis design accepts a wide range of electrified options and breakaway lever trims without requiring complete device replacement.
Electric Latch Retraction (QEL/EL)
Von Duprin manufacturers motorized and solenoid-driven latch retraction options for integration with automatic door operators and physical access control systems. The Quiet Electric Latch (QEL) kit utilizes a motor to retract the push pad and latch bolt. This results in near-silent operation, which is required for healthcare facilities, libraries, and performing arts centers. The motor-driven design draws less current than legacy solenoid (EL) models, enabling longer wire runs and smaller power supplies. Facility managers use these devices to temporarily release the latch for ADA access or to keep the door electronically dogged open during scheduled high-traffic periods.
Removable Mullions and Accessories
Von Duprin mullions enable the installation of rim exit devices on paired door openings, eliminating the need for complex vertical rod assemblies. The mullion serves as a stationary strike post for the latch bolts in the center of the opening. For applications requiring intermittent full-width clearance, such as moving gurneys or large equipment, Keyed Removable (KR) models allow authorized personnel to unlock and lift the post out of the frame. This configuration combines the high security and low maintenance of a rim device with the flexibility of a wide opening for logistics.
Security and Lockdown Solutions
Von Duprin manufacturers specialized hardware to address heightened security requirements in educational and public buildings. The XP98/99 (Extra Protection) series uses a two-piece latchbolt design that reinforces strike engagement under door force. This mechanism achieves a static load rating of 2,000 pounds to mitigate the risk of forced entry through prying or kicking. For campus lockdown protocols, an electrified lever trim allows security personnel to remotely disable the exterior handle, instantly securing the building perimeter. The interior push pad remains mechanically operative at all times to meet life safety codes for free egress.
